As the Superintendent of the Buckeye Elementary School District, it is with great excitement that I welcome staff, community, and students back to school for the 2021-2022 school year! The past year and a half certainly has been unusual, to say the least, and I am more than eager to see the smiling faces of our staff and students on the first day of school. Those of you who know me, know that I believe one of things that makes our district unique is the sense of family and community that is so prevalent everywhere I turn. We care about each other. We have each other’s backs. And, when we are apart, we truly miss the camaraderie and connection. The excitement truly is in the air as we prepare to return.

This year, we embrace incredible opportunities. Our district is embracing the challenge of assisting students to not just make up for any missed learning due to COVID, but to exceed the trajectory that they were on before the pandemic. We have major new initiatives in place for this year to ensure student success, and a whole new era of enhanced collaboration that will yield incredible results for children begins this year. Further, we have wisely and responsibly invested in the resources that our teachers need to support our students and each other. We have ambitious but attainable goals for this school year related to student achievement, and we will be laser focused on meeting them.
Those goals include:
1. Each BESD school will increase overall student pass proficiency rates on the AZMerit Assessments in reading and mathematics, exceeding the rate of state average proficiency improvement.
2. Each BESD school will improve its positioning relative to the regression line created by an analysis of AZMerit achievement to free and reduced lunch rates.

As you can see, we know our time is now, and we know that our learners deserve the best. Working together as both staff and community, I have complete confidence in our ability to demonstrate learner growth like never before.

I also want to take a moment to mention several other key points of pride and excitement relative to the 2021-2022 school year. As you likely know, John S. McCain III Elementary opens its doors to students, and it is a school that will excite learners, families, and staff alike through its innovative programming and incredible student experience. Also, our renovations of other sites began this summer, and many of you will experience the improvement projects made possible by local voters. We are fully committed to continued fiscal responsibility and transparency, and we value the trust our voters have in BESD to allocate funding in the most effective and efficient ways.

Lastly, it is important to remember that COVID-19 is still a part of our lives, and it is vital that we take responsibility for appropriate precautions. I cannot stress enough the importance of being familiar with our mitigation plan – posted on our website – and that everyone focuses on common sense measures, such as handwashing and social distancing, to help minimize the impact of the virus. Although we all prefer a return to “full normal,” our actions will help to determine how close we can get to attaining that goal.

I wish you all a wonderful year ahead; we are going to do fantastic things together. It certainly is an exciting time to be in Buckeye and the biggest reason that is true is because of YOU! Here is to our best year yet!
